The Special Education Minister will meet with campaigners later over plans to create special education centres for children with disabilities.

Five temporary centres have been proposed in the Dublin area due to the lack of space in mainstream schools.

Josepha Madigan says that it was not about replicating the problem of pupil segregation, but offering parents an “option".

However the plan has been criticised by disability and human rights groups, who've described it as 'unacceptable'.

Adam Harris from autism charity, As I Am, says 'unprecedented solutions' are needed.

"The Department themselves have described this situation as an emergency and emergency situations require emergency responses.

"The Minister has the power, the Section 37A power, to compel schools to open special classes where they are required.

"We're calling on the Minister to hone and refine that power so it can be used over the summer months to put in place the required places."
