Man Remanded in Custody over Murder of A Grandad in Skerries

A 28-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Michael Gannon in Skerries.

Dragos Nica with an address an Mourne Park, Skerries, is accused of stabbing the 55-year-old two days ago.

Last Thursday evening, Michael Gannon was stabbed to death while babysitting his two grandchildren at his daughter’s home in Mourne Park.

Gardai found him lying in a pool of blood at the entrance to the house and believe he was attacked after answering the front door.

Shortly afterwards, Dragos Nica was arrested at his home which is right next door to where Mr. Gannon was killed.

This evening, the 28-year-old Romanian native was brought before a special sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice.

He arrived in custody wearing dark tracksuit bottoms and a zip-up top and was formally charged with murdering Mr. Gannon.

The court heard how he made no reply when the charge was first put to him at Balbriggan Garda Station this afternoon.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.

Before he was taken away, the judge also ordered that he placed under special supervision while in prison and receive whatever medical attention he may need.
