A food delivery man on trial for murdering 16-year-old Josh Dunne has told the jury everything he did that night was for his survival.
George Gonzaga Bento has pleaded not guilty, claiming he was acting in self-defence on the night of the 26th of January last year.
George Gonzaga Bento has pleaded not guilty to murdering Josh Dunne in the East Wall area of Dublin and also denies assault causing harm to two others during a fight that started over a stolen electric bike.
He accepts he had a knife on him that night, but told gardai it was for peeling fruit while working as a food delivery man.
Under cross-examination today, he told the jury the knife saved his life and his friend's life that night.
He denied acting the 'hard man' and told the prosecuting barrister, Sean Guerin SC, that, 'when your life is in danger, you fight for your life in any way.'
Mr Guerin accused him of downplaying the force he used and suggested his only concern was for himself after he learned someone had died. Mr Bento disagreed.
The trial continues tomorrow.
