A taxi hijacker has been jailed for stealing the cab and knocking down a Garda.

A court heard in August 2017 two men flagged down a taxi and asked to be taken to Ballymun.

However, during the journey, they pulled out a knife and began swinging it at the taxi driver.

They threatened to stab him and told him to get out.

A high speed garda chase then ensued when gardai hear about the stolen taxi and they spotted it travelling towards Finglas at high speed.

The taxi then rammed two garda cars and also hit a garda.

This garda told the court he remembered looking down to see a large hole in his left arm.

He admitted it is a day he won’t forget for a long time and he’s frightened that he almost didn’t make it home to his family.

Tony Ward of Castlecurragh Park in Mulhuddart pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

He also admitted assault causing harm, endangerment and the unlawful seizure of a vehicle.

The 40 year old, who has no previous convictions and was under the influence, said he was disgusted with his actions.

He was jailed for 3 and half years with 21 months suspended.
