A man remains in custody this morning in connection with the murder of a young woman in Offaly.
The 23-year-old, named locally as Ashling Murphy, was attacked in Tullamore yesterday afternoon.
An area along the Grand Canal remained sealed off overnight.
It's believed the school teacher, who is from the locality, was exercising along the canal between Boland's Lock and Digby Bridge when she was attacked.
A man in his 40s has been arrested and remains in custody at Tullamore Garda station this morning.
Gardaí believe it was a random attack and do not think the victim and the man in custody knew each other.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact Gardaí.
In particular officers are appealing to anyone who was in the Cappincur/Canal walk area of Tullamore before 4pm yesterday to contact them at Tullamore Garda Station.
