A man accused of trying to rob a petrol station on Usher Quay last week is due back in court today.

John Paul Lennon of St. Anthony's Park in Rialto was arrested after two masked raiders threatened staff with knives.

Gardai were called to the ESSO filling station on Usher Quay just before 9pm last Wednesday.

Just moments before the alarm was raised, two people wearing balaclavas and armed with knives demanded money before leaving empty handed.

By pure coincidence, officers from a special Garda task force spotted a man and woman acting suspiciously at nearby Thomas Street.

During questioning, these officers became aware of the attempted robbery and some knives and balaclavas were recovered.

Father of three John Paul Lennon and Danielle Kane, a mother of five from Mount Brown, Inchicore have been charged with the attempted robbery.

Lennon is due in court later today while his co-accused has been remanded in custody until Thursday.
