Man Dies Following Altercation In City Centre

A man in his late 60s has died following what's being described as an altercation, in the city centre.

Gardai were called to the scene on Baggot Street shortly before 11 o'clock last night following reports of an altercation between two men.

One of the men was taken to hospital and was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem exam is due to take place, and gardai at Pearse Street are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.

A garda spokesperson says: "Gardaí at Pearse Street are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his late 60s following an incident on Baggot Street Lower on Monday the 6th of January 2025.

"Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly before 11pm following reports of an altercation involving two males. One of the individuals became unwell following the incident and was brought to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

"The scene is being preserved for forensic and technical examination and inquiries are ongoing.

"The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination has been arranged. The outcome of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and for those with camera footage, including motorists with dashcam, from the area at the time to contact them

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Pearse Street Garda station, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
