Man charged with murder of Mairead Moran

A 27-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Mairead Moran.

The 26-year-old was stabbed to death in broad daylight at her workplace in Kilkenny on Thursday evening.

At 1.37am, Detective Sgt Colin Furlong formally charged Shane Smyth, of Flat 3 McGuinness House, Evans Lane, Kilkenny City with the murder of Mairead Moran.

When asked if he had any resposne to the charge, the 27 year old replied "Not at this time".

Shane Smyth was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and soft shoes for his brief appearance before a special sitting of Kilkenny Distirct Court this afternoon.

An application for legal aid was granted as the court heard Mr Smyth is in receipt of disability allowance.

Judge Eamon O' Brien also granted an application for a full medical and psychiatric assesment be carried out in the coming days.

A small group of Ms Moran's friends gathered outside the courthouse in silence.

Shane Smyth has been remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Friday the 16th of May.
