A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into the supply of drugs into Wheatfield and Cloverhill Prisons.

Gardaí arrested the 42-year-old following the search of a home in the west Dublin area yesterday.

During the search, Gardaí from the Drugs Unit in Ronanstown seized over €180 thousand in cash, a designer watch valued at 10 thousand euro, and a number of mobile phones.

The operation follows a previous seizure involving a drone and a quantity of diamorphine intended for delivery into a west Dublin prison on Monday February 12th.

Both incidents are part of a local initiative under Operation Tara, targeting the supply of drugs into Wheatfield and Cloverhill Prisons.

In a statement today, the Irish Prison Service thanked the Gardaí for their continued efforts to keep drugs out of prisons - adding that prison staff have increased the use of random and intelligence led cell searches on a daily basis, and its Canine Unit carries out regular searches, particularly on deliveries.
