A new survey shows that over three quarters of people support same sex marriage.

The RED C poll conducted for RTE Prime Time and the Sunday Business Post shows that if a referendum was held tomorrow, 76 percent of adults would support same sex marriage rights, 19 percent are against and five percent say they don't know.

Eighty percent of respondents think people in same sex relationships should have the same rights as traditional families.

Almost half, 49 percent believe in equal rights for gay people but say they have some reservations about same sex marriage.

When it comes to the issue of adoption by gay couples, the poll found 59 percent have no reservations about it.

Fourty one percent believe people who oppose same sex marriage rights are homophobic.

The poll was conducted on over one thousand adults between Monday and Wednesday of this week.
