Airbnb-style lockboxes, attached to poles and bike stands, are to be banned from Dublin city next month.
The city council says the containers, that allow tourists access to keys to holiday lets, are a trip hazard and will be removed and destroyed after April 14th.
It only applies to lockboxes left in public spaces and not those attached to private property.
Sinn Féin councillor Ciaran Ó Meachair was among the public reps welcoming the move at a council meeting last night;
"They're a real symbol of how housing in the area has been turned over to Airbnb and short-term rentals. I think it doesn't solve the problem of Airbnb but it's a step in the right direction."
Head of Technical Services with the council is Brendan O'Brien. He says they have contacted companies to let them know they have six weeks after which lockboxes will be removed.
