Local Residents Oppose Dublin Port Plans

Locals residents near Dublin Docks are calling on the Environment Minister to reconsider the proposed expansion of the Port.

The call was made at the Sandymount and Merrion Residents Association annual general meeting last night,

This multimillion project by Dublin Port Company called 3FM would result in the largest storage container facility in Ireland as well as a new bridge over the River Liffey.

But the Sandymount and Merrion Residents Association says there is widespread opposition to the plan. They want Dublin Port to go back to the drawing board and reconsider all its options

They also want the Environment Minister to commission an independent review of the expansion and to speak to international experts to find out what other city based ports have achieved.

They say they want a plan that helps the local community and doesn't just help businesses that use the Port.

Speaking at its AGM on Monday evening Chairman of SAMRA David Turner said: ''Given the widespread opposition (local and political) to the Dublin Port Company’s plan to significantly expand its footprint and to build Ireland’s largest container storage facility beside Sandymount’s UNESCO protected beach its 3FM plan is at a dead end. ''

He added: ''Dublin Port needs to go back to the drawing board and consider all options to minimise its impact and maximise the benefits of its unique position for the whole community and not just for the convenience of businesses that use the port.''
