Local authorities once rejected over a third of empty NAMA units which were put forward to be turned into social housing.
But as the homeless crisis escalates, councils across Dublin are now taking a second look at the hundreds of empty buildings they once rejected.
684 properties have been handed over and they hope to have an extra 400 by 2014.
Aideen Haden of the national housing charity, Threshold, says we are facing the "worst homeless crisis in the history of the state" and need to ensure that every available unit is used for social housing.
