A planned law to stop landlords evicting people into homelessness has passed its first stage.
The Solidarity-People Before Profit bill would mean tenants couldn't be kicked out for renovations.
The Housing Minister says the proposed legislation could undermine the rental sector.
However, it's been passed by 46 votes to 39, with Fianna Fáíl abstaining.
The proposed legislation now goes to committee stage.

Solidarity-People Before Profit Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett said it is "an utter outrage" that Fine Gael is against the bill, and that Fianna Fail refused to vote.
Clondalkin TD Gino Kenny said "Whilst it is brilliant we got the bill over the line, this vote shows us that the Fine Gael/ Fianna Fail cabal that has presided over this ever-worsening crisis for years have not the interest or the will to fix the housing crisis".
"What we must do now on the back of this great result is build a massive movement of people power that will force the government's hand on the question of housing and homelessness", he said.
