Jonathan Dowdall's appeal against the four-year sentence he received for his role in the 2016 murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel is due to be heard this morning.
The former Sinn Féin Councillor testified against Gerry Hutch during a trial that ended with the man known as 'The Monk' being acquitted of murder.
At the end of April, Jonathan Dowdall was accepted into the State’s Witness Protection Programme.
He, like Gerry Hutch, was charged with the murder of David Byrne, who was shot dead during a boxing event at the Regency Hotel in 2016.
However, the charge against Dowdall was dropped and he went on to testify against Hutch after his plea to a less serious offence was accepted.
Both he and his father admitted facilitating the murder of David Byrne by making a room at the hotel available to those behind the attack.
Jonathan Dowdall is serving a 4-year sentence for that but today, he’ll appeal the severity of that sentence.
As soon as his sentence expires, it’s believed he will be moved abroad under a new identity.
