The Department of Foreign Affairs is asking Irish people travelling to Thailand to register their details with them before they leave.

The news comes after months of political unrest in the country. The Thai army has now seized control and has introduced a curfew between 10am and 5pm.

Irish people are being warned to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid demonstrations, protests or security operations.
  • Allow for extra travel time - including to the airport - as roads and public transport have been disrupted.
  • Avoid travelling to temples near the Thai/Cambodian border or to the Southern Thai Provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla.
  • In case of emergency: contact  the Honorary Consuls (one in Bangkok and one in Phuket) or the Irish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. There is no Irish embassy in Thailand.

A number of large-scale political demonstrations have taken place in Bangkok since November 2013.

Thailand’s army chief General seized control of the government on Thursday, two days after he declared martial law. He says the army has to restore order and push through reforms.
