Ireland could be asked to take in up to 20,000 Ukrainian refugees as part of the EU's humanitarian response to the conflict in Ukraine.

The UN says more than half a million people have fled the country, with Poland saying 350,000 have crossed the border.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney, says the scale of this war means an unprecedented response is needed.

Strikes

Explosions are continuing to hit cities including Kharkiv, in the east of Ukraine.

At least ten people have been killed in a rocket strike in the area.

Around 660,000 people are now believed to have fled Ukraine since the conflict broke out.

The UN's warned the situation could become Europe's biggest refugee crisis this century.

Support

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President has called on the European Parliament to prove they will support his country to defend itself from Russia.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said nobody would break Ukraine in an historic address to MEPs.

He gave a stirring address to the European Parliament renewing his call for Ukraine to be immediately made a member of the EU.

At times the translator cried as Zelenskyy said 16 children were killed in attacks yesterday, and he received a standing ovation, with European Council President Charles Michel pledging EU support.

At home, Cabinet has considered a memo in support of Ukraine, with Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney saying Ireland could take in as many as 20,000 refugees, with citizens to be asked to open their doors to house them.
