Increase in Parents Skipping Meals So Children Can Eat

The cost-of-living crisis continues to hit families, with the numbers struggling with food poverty on the rise.

29 per cent of parents skipped meals or reduced portion sizes so their children would have enough to eat, in the last 12 months according to research carried out by Barnardos.

CEO Suzanne Connolly says the numbers are alarming.

''13 per cent of parents told us they are constantly worried about food. 19 per cent have told us they just dont have enough food for their children. 10 per cent are now accesing food vouchers or food banks. And this is a significant increase on the stats we also had in January of last year.''

Barnardos are calling on the Government to develop and implement a Food Poverty Plan. They also want the Government to roll out the hot meals programmes in schools and to help families who need in the most like lone parent families and those on low incomes.
