"Fear"
Dublin Simon’s Tenancy Information & Support Service (TISS) is experiencing a surge in requests for help from people who fear they will join the 6,093 number of people in emergency accommodation in Dublin.
Orla Dwyer from Dublin Simon’s TISS teams says: "We are currently dealing with a very high volume of referrals and are sadly seeing an increase in the number of older tenants at risk of homelessness, including people in their 70s & 80s.
"This is naturally a hugely distressing situation for any person but even more so for people in their latter years when they should have security and peace but are facing the unimaginable situation of finding themselves homeless."
"Setback"
Focus Ireland CEO Pat Dennigan says: "During 2020, incredible work was achieved during the pandemic to keep the most vulnerable protected. Despite this latest setback, we made major progress working with the State, local authorities and NGOs to reduce the number of people homeless from a record total of over 10,000 to under 8,000.
"We are now deeply concerned that the figures are heading in the wrong direction, undoing the major progress that was made last year. The progress that was made during the last two years is now being lost because we have stopped doing the things that worked - protecting renters and freezing rents. "Unfortunately, we are facing another winter in which many children will be spending Christmas in emergency accommodation."
