Demand for water in the Greater Dublin area hit record levels over the weekend.

The equivalent of water supply for an extra 200,000 people was used on Saturday alone.

Irish Water is thinking about bringing in a hosepipe ban, due to a surge in demand across the country.

16 of the utility's drinking water schemes are in drought and 38 are at risk of going into drought because of the warm weather.

Head of customer operations, Yvonne Harris, says they will decide this week on whether to introduce a hosepipe ban;

"You know our ground sources are in drought at the moment, our weather forecast is usually a ten day, I don't believe that the weather has changed dramatically so on that basis it is likely that we would be looking to prepare our application for the hosepipe ban in the next few days."

The utility is urging people to conserve water for essential use.
