People who use Grindr are being warned to watch out for a scam on the app.
It begins when two people chat for a bit and then agree to meet up.
The person behind the scam profile, which appears genuine, explains that they were once attacked during a hook-up.
They claim that this has left them scared to meet up with strangers, and ask if the person knows about "LGID".
The scammer says this is a website that people sign up to to prove they are safe to meet.
A link provided to "LGID" claims it is:
A “lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer anti-offender screening system".
The Grindr user is asked to sign-up to it, at a cost of €2 which it's claimed covers the cost of processing the ID.
The bogus site even claims 50% of all payments get donated to LGBT harassment victims.
If someone submits their card details, €50 is immediately taken out of their account.
Some people have then had more money taken, and have had their details held for blackmail.
ESET Ireland is advising people using Grindr to be aware of the scam.
In a blog post, it advises "extra caution when contacts on social media suggest following links that require filling out personal and payment details".
