The government has spent €1.2 billion on buying homes from from the private market during the housing crisis.
That's according to new figures published in the Sunday Independent today.
A total of 7,169 houses were bought from private-sector builders since 2011.
€218 million has been spent on buying 974 units for social housing in the Dublin City Council area.
A further €21.7 million was spent in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, €48.4 million in South Dublin, and €134.4 million in Fingal.
Critics have said the strategy represents poor value for money, and that public bodies should be developing housing directly.
