The Transport Minister will today look for government approval to extend the Luas to Finglas in north Dublin.

The move will allow the project to go to planning and could see trams operating by 2031.

Under this plan, the green line would be extended at Broombridge, with new tracks running for almost 4 kilometres to Finglas.

The journey time from the furthest station at Charlestown, just north of Finglas village, to College Green, would be around half an hour.

The route will be mostly off-road and segregated from traffic, serving a population of around 60,000 people.

It’s estimated that the new line will take around 440,000 car journeys along the route off the roads.
