A man in his 40s has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery in Kilmainham in Dublin.
Shortly before 7pm last night, a masked man entered a shop on Military Road with a firearm and demanded money.
Two plainclothes members of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation happened to be in the shop at the time. One of the detectives identified himself and was threatened by the masked man.
A physical struggle broke out with the garda, assisted by a female colleague and a member of the public, helping to disarm and restrain the man. He was later arrested and taken to a Garda Station in Dublin.
The gardaí were unarmed at the time.
The firearm used is now believed to be a replica. It has been seized for a ballistic examination and investigations are ongoing.
