Gardaí Investigating After Army Chaplain Stabbed Outside Galway Army Barracks

An army chaplain in his 50's remains in hospital after being stabbed at an army barracks in Galway.

The defence forces fired shots and a young man in his teens was subsequently arrest by Gardaí.

Resident of Galway have been left in shock after an incident of unprecedented violence last night

Army chaplain Fr Paul Murphy was stabbed outside Renmore Barracks at 10.45pm.

Galway councillor Alan Cheevers says has rocked the community:

"The general consensus from the community and the people I've spoken to is deep shock and deep concern."

Defence forces members fired shots and a teenage civilian was restrained and subsequently arrested by Gardaí.

Tánaiste and Defence Minister Micheál Martin commended the actions of the Defence Forces and condemned the attack.

Fr Murphy was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment of non-life threating injuries while is alleged attacked is being held in Garda Custody
