Francis Fitzgerald Is New Justice Minister

Frances Fitzgerald has been named as the new Minister for Justice and Equality.

Her position as Minister for Children will be taken over by the Laois Offaly TD, Charlie Flanagan.

The Taoiseach has also re-assigned the Department of Defence to himself, pending giving that post to another existing Minister.

Enda Kenny made the announcement in the Dáil earlier:

Frances Fitzgerald's appointment to the role of Justice Minister comes in the wake of a difficult period with further challenges ahead.

Both the Department of Justice and the Garda Siochana are currently embroiled in a number of controversies.

Inquiries are underway into the recording of phone calls at Garda stations and the alleged bugging of the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.

The quashing of penalty points and allegations of Garda malpractice are also being investigated.

The appointment of a new Garda Commissioner and the establishment of an independent policing authority will also feature on the Minister's agenda.

The Irish Independent's Security Editor Tom Brady says rebuilding relations with the Gardai will be foremost among Frances Fitzgerald's challenges:
