Former Dublin manager, Jim Gavin, is to be honoured with the Freedom of the City at an event next week.

He will join the likes of Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Morther Teresa in receiving the title after guiding the capital's footballers to their fifth All-Ireland win in a row.

The event will take place at the Mansion House on January 18th.

The Clondalkin native was the manager of the Dublin senior team from 2012 to 2019, before stepping down last November.

The award acknowledges the contribution of certain people to the life of the city. It also bestows honour to important visitors to Dublin.

Recipients are referred to as a ‘Freeman’ or ‘Freewoman’ of Dublin. They are also Honorary Citizens of the city.

Dublin Lord Mayor, Paul McAuliffe, says Gavin will enjoy ancient privileges along with the title;

"His right to graze sheep in Stephen's Green is secure but his responsibility to carry a bow to defend the city is also something that Jim will do, you couldn't get a better defender of Dublin."
