A former Dublin footballer has been cleared of breaking an opponent's jaw during a club game in 2012.

Brendan McManamon, of Cyprus Downs, Templeogue, was accused of assaulting an off-duty Garda causing him harm.

There were scenes of jubilation outside Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after McManamon was found not guilty.

He stood accused of punching Enda Ledwith in the face during a game between St Jude's and Na Fianna on March 31st 2012.

Mr. Ledwith, a serving Garda, told the court that Brendan lashed out after the players collided with ten minutes left on the clock.

Mr. McManamon, whose brother Kevin is an All-Ireland winner with the Dublin football team, denied this and said he reacted in self defence after being hit in the testicles.

The jury were sent away to begin deliberations yesterday and returned this morning to look over some video footage taken from the game.

The amateur shots were shown earlier in the trial but only caught the men coming together and don't show the alleged punch.

After just under two hours of deliberations, the jury came back to the courtroom to return a not guilty verdict.
