Crews have been battling fires at two empty buildings in south Dublin overnight.

A number of fire engines were deployed to Ballyboden and at a site near Ticknock that resulted in smoke drifting across the M50.

Five fire engines including a turntable ladder have been tackling the large fire at a former religious order building on Edmonstown Road in Ballyboden.

Gardaí were alerted to the blaze at around 8.20pm. The Edmondstown Road was closed and local diversions were put in place.

The old Augustinian building, that has been empty for a number of years, was the subject of controversial housing plans.

Almost 500 apartments were planned for the site before planning permission was overturned after High Court action was taken by a local tidy towns group.

Meanwhile three fire engines also attended a derelict building fire near Ticknock last night.
