A strategy to stop biodiversity loss in north Dublin can't be achieved because of a lack of funding.

Fingal County Council's plan includes a hundred actions to be carried out by the end of the decade, but only a third will be looked at.

Public consultation was completed this month on Fingal's draft Biodiversity Action Plan that will run until 2030, and that will look to stem habitat loss and protect species.

But the Irish Times reports the council will only focus on 32 of the 100 measures because of a lack of funding.

Fingal says it would cost €4 million a year to implement and would require six full-time staff but the resources can't be put in place because of other competing priorities such as housing, roads, sports and community facilities.

The council will instead prioritise measures including the management of special conservation and protection areas at Howth Head, making open space more biodiversity-friendly and updating the Fingal biodiversity website.
