One of Dublin's best known football schools has announced it's to welcome girls for the first time in it's more than 130 year history.

St Joseph's secondary school in Fairview says it will become co-ed from September next year.

Joeys says it's part of changes to modernise the historic school including the addition of a new technology wing.

There will be new subjects including coding and robotics and a free hot lunch service for students.

Principal Seán Stack said; “We’re delighted to be able to share our excellent facilities and curriculum with a new collection of students. St. Joseph’s has a strong tradition of excellence alongside evolution and these changes allow us to be an early adopter to social needs.”

The renowned school counts a number of Dublin GAA players, actor Brendan Gleeson and former Taoiseach Charles Haughey as among it's past pupils.

As part of becoming a co-educational school a dedicated Assistant Principal has been recruited. Ciara Dowling will be in charge of accommodating the change and looking after new students.
