Its used in a wide range of fake tan products, skin creams and beauty products.
UK online pharmacy Medicine Direct says the cosmetics industry will be badly affected by the lack of supply.
The shortage has already impacted a number of UK and European cosmetic manufacturers, and the increase in demand for the limited supply of ethoxydiglycol has seen its price increase from €14 to €120 per kilo.
Hussain Abdeh, clinical director and superintendent pharmacist at Medicine Direct, says: "Ethoxydiglycol is almost single handedly responsible for how cosmetics are applied to the skin. Without it, many cosmetic products as we know them would be unusable."
