Officials fear there could be a wave of scams using data stolen in the HSE cyber attack.
The government yesterday received a decryption key which could let it regain access to locked files.
But hackers still have copies of the information, and it’s thought they could start releasing it online.
Dr Sean McSweeney is the head of the computer science department at Munster Technological University.
He says if the information is sold on the dark web, "threat actors" will try to create different kinds of scams or attacks.
He is recommending that people keep their guard up.
