A group of bikers who save lives by transporting blood to hospitals and clinics are calling to be exempt from toll charges.

Ambulances that perform the same or similar services can pass through toll booths without having to pay.

The volunteers from the Blood Bike Leinster charity say they cannot do their job properly because of the charges and delays going through tolls.

In their line of work, every second counts in life saving situations and delays that can be avoided are unacceptable.

In a statement, Easytrip, which provides electronic tags for customers at tolls across the country, said it's "happy to cover the blood bikes toll charges until such time as a resolution is found and they are made exempt. We have already begun this process and it will be implemented straight away".

It added: "We agree that the services Blood Bikes provide are of such importance that exemption from toll charges should be applied. Lives depend on it."
