Plans to install public toilets in South Dublin at a cost of €3m have been described as 'ridiculous'.

A feasibility study is being carried out into the idea.

A motion to install 14 public toilets in the Southside was submitted at a council meeting in October.

It was agreed an amended feasibility study would be done on loos in certain suburbs.

Study

However, Fine Gael councillor David McManus says the facilities which are being proposed cost anything from €250,000 upwards per unit: "They must be gold plated to cost €3m for 14 public toilets.

"In my view the study should be flushed down the toilet."

But Independent councillor Eoin O Broin who put forward the proposal says the figure is being exaggerated: "I would assume the costs are in the region of 50, 60, 70 grand rather than the quarter of a million that's being quoted."

The majority of councillors have voted in favour of this feasibility study being carried out.
