An assault on a young Muslim girl in Dublin is being condemned as a hate crime.
The 17-year-old allegedly had her hijab taken off by a group in Dundrum Village on Sunday.
In mobile footage being shared on social media, the girl appears to be chased by a gang of young people.
She can be heard crying, while a broken egg and its shell is visible on the ground.
The Culture Minister has condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms".
Josepha Madigan has wished Gardai "a speedy resolution in bringing these culprits to justice".
Dr Ali Selim from the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, said it was "a hate crime".
He said it was an attack on "this girl's religious identity as well as the long-cherished Irish norm of cohesiveness".
Dr. Seilm believes "there is a desperate need now for hate crime legislation".
He admitted this is "something we did not need in the past".
However, "the current diversity of the Irish society makes it a must", he said.
