Cameras to catch illegal dumping in the North Inner City will be in place by the end of the month.
The pilot project on Belvedere Place, Sherrard Street Lower and Summer Street North will use CCTV to catch dumpers for the first time in almost a decade.
It's after the north inner city was again named the dirtiest urban area in the country by the latest IBAL report.
The cameras, which will only be used to trace people who dump from their cars, are set to be switched on within the next two weeks, the City Council has confirmed.
Local Green Party Councillor Janet Horner says they have been working to insure the cameras are used in line with data protection laws:
"We have really bad, severe levels of dumping on some streets, which is really inhibiting the quality of life of the people who live there. So, we need to be using every tool in our arsenal to try and prevent it, and to do prosecutions where it is occurring. So, CCTV is one thing we've urgently needed to bring back for a long time".
The North Inner City was the only area of the country to be branded 'seriously littered' in an IBAL survey earlier this month.
