A swimming ban at three Dublin beaches has been extended.

Tests are being carried out at Dollymount, Sandymount and Merrion after a stormwater overflow.

Irish Water says it happened at Ringsend during this week's yellow rainfall warning.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has decided to extend the ban to five of its beaches.

They are Seapoint, Sandycove, The Forty Foot, Killiney and White Rock.

The ban applies to Sandymount and Merrion strands, but they are already closed to swimmers.

There are no swim notices in place at both locations all summer because of "general water quality".

Irish Water says the stormwater overflow "operated in compliance with regulations, and was fully screened and settled".

However, after consulting with Dublin City Council and the HSE it also decided to ban swimming at Dollymount.

Irish Water says it "regrets the impact this may have on beach users".

It's hoped Dollymount Strand will re-open to swimmers once test results come back clear.

However, the swimming bans in place at Sandymount and Merrion won't be lifted until the general water quality improves.
