Dublin is a safe city to cycle in.

That's according to one cycling advocate after a conference was told that Dublin is way behind other European cities.

The European Cyclists Federation said Dublin cyclists are battling with cars, trucks and other motorists on a daily basis.

Kevin Mayne says this has to change if we're to get safety up to the same levels as our European counterparts.

"It's way behind the European benchmarks now where really equality or segregation is there or you really have to ferociously calm driver behaviour".

But a leading cycling advocate says Dublin has become safer for people on two wheels.

Dr. Mike McKillen from Cyclist dot ie says this is because of a number of major changes here in the city.

"That's due to all the good work the road and traffic department has been doing in Dublin city. And it's due to the introduction of HGV ban, the heavy goods vehicle ban in the city, you can only bring an HGV in now under permit. And also with the opening of the Port Tunnel".

The comments came as over 70 cycling campaigners gather here in the city for the European Cyclists Federation's AGM.
