Changes to fines for parking on footpaths, cycle tracks and bus lanes have been welcomed by a cycling group.

They will double from €40 to €80 from February 1st.

Una Morrison, spokesperson for Dublin Cycling Campaign, says people on bikes are being put in dangerous situations by being pushed out into traffic;

"But something that we think is really important is that this fine is actually enforced because it doesn't matter if it's €40, €80, a million euro if no one gets the fines it really isn't a deterrent."

She says private parking operators employed by the councils should also be allowed to hand out the fines, alongside Gardaí.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan says the change will "promote active travel and encourage a more considerate use of road space".

"Parking on footpaths puts vulnerable pedestrians, such as wheelchair users and those pushing buggies, at significant risk by forcing them off the footpath and into traffic. Parking in bus and cycle lanes endangers cyclists and undermines State investment in sustainable public transport infrastructure" he said.
