All taxis that collect passengers from Dublin Airport will need to have a credit card machine in the next few months.
From May, passengers will have to be given the choice to pay by card as well as cash.
Dublin Airport says the new rule is being brought in following demand for cabs to take cards.
All taxi drivers that hold permits to operate at Dublin Airport have been given advance notice of the requirement.
A memo sent to drivers explained that the decision was being taken to "address the ongoing challenges for passengers who require credit card payment options".
It also added that card machines in taxis look likely to become mandatory, under the 2019 National Maximum Taxi Fare Review.
