One of the Peru Two, Michaela McCollum, who was jailed for trying to smuggling drugs, has been released from a Lima prison early.

Twenty three year old Michaela from Dungannon, Co Tyrone and Scottish woman Melissa Reid were sentenced in 2013 for six years and eight months after trying to smuggle 11 kilos of cocaine worth almost 2 million euro to Spain.

It's not known if she can return to the north immediately or if she will have to spend more time in Peru.

STATEMENT FROM SOLICITOR, KEVIN WINTERS

We can confirm that we act for Michaela McCollum.
She was released from prison at 5 00pm last night following a successful application for parole.
She has NOT been released under any repatriation scheme or other protocol between Peru and the UK.
There will be a pending judicial hearing to determine the conditions of her parole.
At this stage it remains unclear when she may be eligible to return home.
That will be a matter for the court.
We are working with her lawyers in Peru and will hope to be in a position to clarify further as soon as possible.
