A draft law on the use of facial recognition technology will be published later.
The move would allow Gardaí to use the technology when analysing CCTV footage.
Officers wanted to use this technology for some time because at present they have to trawl through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage to identify suspects.
This new facial recognition technology or FRT would mean they can use biometric identification to search footage which would significantly speed up investigations.
Following the Dublin riots last month, the offences of riot and violent disorder were also included in the proposed legislation.
The technology has faced some opposition with the Irish Council for Civil Liberties saying it poses an extreme risk to people's fundamental rights.
