An event to remember those involved in the police force that pre-dated An Garda Siochana is being deferred.
It follows criticism that a commemoration for members of the Royal Irish Constabulary was inappropriate.
The Taoiseach says he feels it's important Ireland acknowledges all aspects of its past.
Leo Varadkar said the event would not be a celebration.
However, many politicians called for it to be cancelled.
This evening, the Justice Minister confirmed he is deferring the commemoration, following what he called a "disappointing response".
Charlie Flanagan said he does not believe the event "can now take place in an atmosphere that meets the goals and guiding principles of the overall commemorative programme".
Minister Flanagan said he is committed to proceeding with "an alternative commemoration in the months ahead".
