Bertie Ahern has branded the proposition of a directly elected Mayor for Dublin a "stupid idea".
While the former Taoiseach also says the upcoming mayoral election in Limerick is a "mistake".
The citizen's assembly voted in 2022 that Dublin should have a directly elected mayor with wide-ranging powers and responsibility for areas including housing, transport and emergency services.
But at an event discussing the idea, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern described it as a "stupid" idea and questioned how it would work, according to the Irish Times.
Speaking at a debate organised by the Urban Land Institute, he said he did his best to delay any implementation of the idea when he was in office.
Instead the former Lord Mayor of Dublin said a Minister for the Greater Dublin Area would be a better idea.
