A 210-bed co-living development in Castleknock has been granted planning permission.

The 5-storey block, that has 182 rooms, is to be built on the site of Brady's pub and includes shared living areas, TV rooms and a roof terrace.

An Bord Pleanála gave the plan the green light despite it's own inspector recommending the proposal be refused.

Local labour representatives have described it as a 'planning disaster'. TD Joan Burton criticised the decision;

"This disastrous decision is the direct consequence of the new planning guidelines by Minister Eoghan Murphy – these new rules are steadily dismantling high quality, community orientated planning in favour of substandard housing motivated purely by profit."

Labour councillor John Walsh went on to say;

"It beggars belief that An Bord Pleanála ignored the report of its own inspector in choosing to give permission to this development. The Government has sidelined responsible planning and has created a developer’s charter – shared living developments of this kind will never create sustainable communities and are entirely inappropriate to a suburban location."
