Dublin city council is to look for an exemption to allow it to continue long-term leasing deals with developers for social housing.
The government wants to end the practice by 2025 as part of its Housing for All plan.
Dublin city councillors have been told the local authority will look for an exemption, in certain circumstances, to allow it to keep leasing homes from private developers for social housing.
The council has already committed to leasing more than 400 social homes this year, with another 2,500 planned over the next two years, according to the Irish Times.
Management say leasing needs to be reduced but that the advantages are so immediate it's hard to resist.
Officials say they will look for dispensations to allow it to carry out the regeneration of older council complexes, moving tenants into the homes in the meantime.
Up to 8,000 DCC flats need substantial work carried out.
