Dublin city council officials have taken issue with the litter league table produced by IBAL.
Parts of the capital, including the north inner city, have repeatedly been ranked among the dirtiest urban areas in the state by the Irish Business Against Litter group.
The council's head of waste management, Barry Woods, told councillors at a central area meeting yesterday that Dublin is being compared with smaller areas;
"Dublin city had 8.5 million visitors last year and yet we're compared to the likes of an Ennis or Tralee. We feel we should be compared to like a Glasgow or Manchester, a city of comparable size".
Meanwhile Mr Woods told public reps that some residents in Dublin's north inner city have "no sense of pride for their community" and are dumping their waste on the street on a daily base.
There are a large number of multi-let properties in the area creating a huge amount of waste. The council official says a change in legislation to make landlords responsible for their tenants’ waste collection should be considered.
