A Crumlin man who stabbed his father to death with a World War 1 Sword has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

Edward Boylan, of no fixed abode, claimed he was suffering from a mental disorder when he killed his 74-year-old father two years ago.

It took the jurors just 14 minutes to reach a verdict this afternoon.

During the three day trial, they heard how Edward Boylan Junior stabbed his father 13 times at a retirement complex in Kimmage in Jan 2012.

The 74-year-old's body was found by fire fighters after he set his flat on fire.

After being charged with murder, Edward Junior was assessed by two medical experts who found he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time.

On the day he killed his father, the court heard he'd been released from prison in a psychotic state with no supervision.

Both medical experts concluded that given his condition, he wouldn't have been able to stop himself from doing what he did to his father.

The 31-year-old has been sent to the Central Mental Hospital where his condition will be assessed further before he returns to court in a ten days.
