A nationwide crackdown on the use of mobile phones while driving will be launched tomorrow.
Gardai say the aim of the operation is to educate drivers on the risks of using their phones behind the wheel and to inform them of the new laws in relation to the offence which come into force on the 1st of May.
The new regulations, in addition to existing laws on the use of a phone in a vehicle, make it an offence to send or read a text message or to hold or touch a mobile phone while driving.
So far nearly 10-thousand drivers have been caught holding their mobile phones while in 2013 more than 28-thousand people were detected using a phone while driving.
